Well, weird that I found out that the car isnt a W72 lol, the cowl tag i pulled out of the TA must be a 77 or so cowl tag and the dash VIN is right. Pretty weird so it must be built with a 77 back after the car was wrecked in the early 90's. lol, I feel pretty stupid haha
All the colors was right, Roman Red top and bottom colors and everything. Oh well

Look on the bright side Dave now there's nothing holding you back. You can build the car like LeighP's pro touring with a monster Butler engine without upsetting the purists.

80 didnt have a W72 , it was 77-79.  the cowl tag has the year of your car, and the assembly date.  also the sticker on the drivers door will have the build date.

W72 400 Block Codes

1977
WA - 4 speed
Y6 - Auto

1978
WC - 4 speed
X7 - Auto

1979
PWH - 4-speed

your cowl tag has a 3 digit code like , 07B
the 07 is the month for July
01 - January
02 - February
03 - March
04 - April
12 - December
and so on...
the A,B,C,D,E  is the week in that month.  A being the first week, B the second week

I hope this helps you decode your car.

as for knowing for sure if you have a W72 you need the build sheet or the PHS
they are the only thing that will tell you if your car is a W72
all the 400 cid's are the L78 400 . you just need the block code and build sheet to know if the L78 was upgraded to the W72 400 cid.

you say your tag is dated 80 (1980)  and the build date is (12A)

an 1980 t/a with a first week in Dec. build would be  December of 1979

so yours is a early build.

what the first 6 or 7 dig of your vin?
